Cartlanna Sheosaimh Uí Éanaí: The Joe Heaney Archives

Abstract

This essay outlines the creation of the Joe Heaney digital archives. A renowned traditional performer from Galway, Ireland, Heaney (1919-1984) became a professional singer and was awarded the National Endowment for the Arts in 1982. The creation of the Archives was supported by the Irish Research Council and in various ways by the National University of Ireland, Galway and the University of Washington, where much of the original material is housed. The Archives seek to redress neglect of Heaney’s memory in the years since his death.
