Sean-nós i gConamara / Sean-nós in Connemara: Digital Media and Oral Tradition in the West of Ireland

Abstract

In the west of Ireland, Irish-speaking regions called gaeltachts are home to a long-standing but understudied form of unaccompanied and highly ornamented singing in Irish known as sean-nós. Supported by fieldwork conducted with sean-nós singers in the South Conamara gaeltacht in 2005, this article seeks to provide an ethnographically-based introduction to sean-nós and an examination of the ways in which digital technologies are being used to continue this fascinating tradition.
